Study right in the heart of Bordeaux. The Academy of French Language in Bordeaux is located in a spacious 19th century three-story building, with easy access to public transportation.
These programs integrate all aspects of the language: reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, phonetics and vocabulary. The accelerated teaching methods allow participants at lower proficiency levels to acquire the language skills needed for effective communication in a short period of time, and allows participants at higher proficiency levels to attain expression proficiency at an abstract level. Topics studied include everyday situations, French culture, society, and history.

This intensive program is comprised of the ‘Regular Program' in the mornings plus 8 afternoon classes. The curriculum is similar to the 'Regular Program' (see above) with the additional afternoon classes devoted to the use and practical application of French on a wide range of topics. Classwork relates to French culture, social, political and economic life. A variety of exercises are used including opinion polls, debates, and reports. This program is ideal for students who are seeking to maximize the amount of French they can learn per week.
• Long Duration: Regular Program (20 classes a week)
Levels: All Levels
Duration: 3, 6, 9 or 12 months
This extensive program ensures that students improve rapidly and attain proficiency in French. It is ideal for students seeking to gain an in-depth knowledge of the language as well as French culture, contemporary civilization and current affairs. This ‘Regular' program focuses on improving reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with the development of grammatical skills and vocabulary for communicative proficiency. The curriculum is specially designed according to the different needs of each proficiency level (see Placement Test and Proficiency Levels below). Class work using everyday topics and modern teaching methods ensures that students achieve set goals and progress rapidly. Classes emphasize practice of the language using oral expression, enabling the participant to communicate effectively. At the end of each long duration program, students will formally evaluate their exact level of French by undertaking the T.E.F. (Test d'Evaluation de Français) of the Paris Chamber of Commerce. This test is included as part of the program.
• Combination Tailored (24 or 28 classes a week)
Levels: All Levels
Duration: Minimum of 1 week
This program consists of the ‘Regular Program' (20 classes a week) plus ‘Individual Tuition' (4 or 8 classes a week). Every morning, participants study the ‘Regular Program' and then study one-to-one with a teacher in the afternoon. This program is ideal for those requiring a tailored intensive program in a specific subject area. The one-to-one portion of the program can be tailored to fit participants' individual needs, such as French Language, Business, Law, or Exam Preparation. It allows the student to interact with a group and also engage in personalized attention from private one to one tuition. Students attend the ‘Regular Program' in the morning plus 4 or 8 one-to-one classes per week, scheduled in the afternoons.
• French for Business (30 classes a week)
Levels: Elementary to Proficient
Duration: Minimum of 1 week
Centered on the business world, this program is designed to suit the specific requirements of executives and business people aiming to acquire commercial French through varied aspects such as reports, business or product presentations, negotiations, commercial correspondence, job presentation, current commercial or financial topics, and speech preparation. The aim of the program is to achieve a substantial level of competence when speaking French in work situations. Students attend the ‘Regular Program' in the morning plus 10 private lessons of Business French per week, scheduled in the afternoons.
These courses are ideal for participants who wish to combine their language studies with examination preparation classes. Students should also be enrolled in the Regular program consisting of 22 classes a week. The optional course classes are held in the afternoons. Additional fees and minimum levels of proficiency apply.
• D.E.L.F. A1/A2 Preparation
A total of 30 afternoon classes held over 4 weeks – Elementary levels
This optional course focuses on preparation for the D.E.L.F. examinations set by the French Ministry of Education. Upon passing the exam, students will receive the D.E.L.F. A1 or A2 Certificate. From May 7 to Jun 1 or from Sep 3 to 28.
• D.E.L.F. B1/B2 Preparation
A total of 40 afternoon classes held over 6 weeks – Intermediate level
This optional course focuses on preparation for the D.E.L.F. examinations set by the French Ministry of Education. Upon passing the exam, students will receive the D.E.L.F. B1 or B2 Certificate. From April 23 to June 1 or from
August 20 to September 28.
• D.F.A. (Diplôme de Français des Affaires)
A total of 48 classes held over 3 weeks – Upper Elementary to Advanced
This optional course aims to prepare participants undertaking the Business French Diploma examinations. The course comprises of 16 classes a week
There are 6 main proficiency levels, based on those officially defined by the Council of Europe. First, participants are placed according to the level indicated on the application form. At the start of the program non-beginners take a written and oral placement test. Second placements are made according to the results of the placement tests. The oral test consists of a personal interview that includes an assessment of the participants' syntax, vocabulary, pronunciation, and intonation.
TOTAL BEGINNER
This level is for participants who have never learned French or who have learned a few words but cannot express themselves in complete sentences. Classes focus on introducing basic vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures, and simple texts. Phonetics exercises and drills ensure that participants learn correct pronunciation and intonation. This special Total Beginners program provides a good foundation to the French language.
FALSE BEGINNER
This level is for those who have learned a few words but cannot express themselves in complete sentences. Classes focus on building participants' vocabulary, grammar and sentence structures. Classwork includes everyday topics and participants are encouraged to converse and express themselves using basic sentence structures.
ELEMENTARY
This level is for those who have learned French, have a grasp of simple sentence structures, and have learned basic grammar systematically. Classes focus on improving participants' vocabulary, listening, reading, and speaking skills. Written exercises include composing simple letters, short essays, and reports. Phonetics exercises and drills ensure that participants learn correct pronunciation and intonation. Classwork includes topics on French culture and society and participants are encouraged to converse on daily topics and express themselves using elementary sentence structures.
INTERMEDIATE
This level is for those who are able to converse on general topics and express themselves using more complex sentence structures in French. Classes work on increasing the level of grammar and vocabulary, enabling participants to express themselves functionally in different contexts. Classwork focuses on French current events, civilization, and literature, to build vocabulary while at the same time developing a greater awareness of French culture and society. Emphasis is placed on participants' grammar, syntax, writing, oral expression, and listening comprehension skills. Oral expression classes include discussions of current events. Exercises to improve writing, speaking, and grammar skills include writing reports, letters, narratives, and essays. Phonetics exercises and drills ensure that participants quickly master correct pronunciation.
ADVANCED
This level is for those who can discuss general topics, raise complex questions, and express their viewpoints clearly using correct pronunciation. Participants can express themselves systematically using appropriate expressions and language norms. The curriculum is focused on enabling participants to express themselves proficiently at an abstract level. Course literature includes French nonfiction, articles, and financial texts. To improve fluency, classwork includes advanced writing and oral expression styles and techniques, such as commentaries, speeches and debates.
PROFICIENT (SUPERIOR)
This level is for those who posses a high command of the French language and culture and are able to converse fluently and effectively using appropriate expressions and language norms. The curriculum is focused on enabling participants to master the language and express themselves in a proficient manner at an abstract level. Classwork focuses on perfecting writing skills and oral expression and developing a global perspective of French culture in relation to participants' particular field of interest.

Teachers are native French and have degrees in teaching French as a Foreign Language. A range of up-to-date, and carefully selected materials are used in class, giving participants valuable information on modern-day French culture and society while at the same time developing their language and communication skills.
To ensure a comprehensive learning experience, a range of social, cultural and leisure programs are offered for no additional cost, within the total program. These events are held to deepen the participant's knowledge of the region and the French way of life. A wide range of destinations and activities are offered, and they vary depending on program intake. Activities are held in the afternoons and may include guided tours and excursions to the following attractions:
- Social and cultural activities such as cooking and patisserie classes, wine and cheese tasting
- 18th and 19th century architecture and historical monuments in Bordeaux
- Museums including the Modern Art Museum and the 'Aquitaine Museum', a historical regional museum, interesting for its history of the Bordeaux wine trade and commerce from 17th to 19th century
- Full day excursion to the Arcachon Bay and Dune du Pyla, the highest sand dune in Europe, which offers a breathtaking view of the Atlantic ocean and pine forest
- Guided tour of the St André cathedral
- Full day excursion to the medieval village of St Emilion overlooking the vineyards
Participants' progress is assessed through continuous homework assignments and tests throughout the programs. At the successful completion of the program, a certificate is awarded certifying the type of program, the number of hours studied, and the completed level of proficiency.
To cater to for the varying needs of the participants enrolled in the program, a range of accommodation options, located close to school, are offered. These options include: Host Family, Student Residence, Studio, or Hotel. Participants who have enrolled in the program are given details of the accommodation prior to departure. These include a description of the accommodation, the address, and the location in relation to the school. Accommodation is available on a first come first served basis so early application is recommended.
